"[And Allah would not punish them while you are among them]." Al-Hasan said: Meaning, until We remove you from their midst.
"[And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness]." He says: The people were not seeking forgiveness, and had they sought forgiveness from Allah, they would not have been punished.
Surat al-Anfal, from verse (34) to verse (35).
﴿وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنْتَ فيهم﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: أَيْ: حَتَّى نُخْرِجَكَ مِنْ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِهِمْ.
﴿وَمَا كَانَ الله معذبهم وهم يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ﴾ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الْقَوْمَ لمْ يَكُونُوا يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ، وَلَوِ اسْتَغْفَرُوا اللَّهَ لَمَا عذبُوا.
