[And know that anything you obtain of spoils, then indeed for Allah is its fifth and for the Messenger and for the near relatives and the orphans and the needy and the traveler]. Al-Hasan said: This refers to whatever they obtained of spoils during fighting; so its fifth belongs to Allah—the fifth is lifted, and Allah returns it to the Messenger, and to the relatives of the Messenger, and to the orphans, the needy, and the traveler; that is for them according to what rectifies their needs, there is no fixed time for that. And four-fifths are for those who fought for it.
Muhammad said: Yahya mentioned a difference of opinion regarding the distribution of the fifth; and this has its place in the books of jurisprudence.
[If you have believed in Allah and in what We sent down upon Our servant on the Day of Criterion]. Qatadah and Mujahid said: It is the Day of Badr, on which Allah distinguished between the truth and falsehood; so Allah granted victory to His Prophet and defeated his enemy, [the day the two armies met], the army of the believers and the army of the polytheists.
