[But how do they appoint you judge when they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allah?] (5:43), to the end of the verse. Qatadah said: Meaning, they have the clarification of that over which they disputed regarding the affair of their slain one; that is, the Torah contains that a life is for a life.

﴿وَكَيْفَ يُحَكِّمُونَكَ وَعِنْدَهُمُ التَّوْرَاةُ فِيهَا حكم الله﴾ الْآيَةَ. قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: يَعْنِي: عِنْدَهُمْ بَيَانُ مَا تَشَاجَرُوا فِيهِ مِنْ شَأْنِ قَتِيلِهِمْ؛ أَيْ: إِنَّ فِي التَّوْرَاة أَن النَّفس بِالنَّفسِ.
