{When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease}—meaning: doubt—{said, "Their religion has deluded these people." Al-Kalbi said: It has reached us that when the polytheists set out from Mecca to Badr, people who had previously professed Islam set out with them. When they saw the small number of believers, they fell into doubt, acted as hypocrites, fought alongside the polytheists, and said: "Their religion has deluded these people," referring to the believers.
Allah said: {And whoever relies upon Allah—then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might}—in His retribution—{Wise}—in His command.
﴿إِذْ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبهم مرض﴾ أَيْ: شَكٌّ ﴿غَرَّ هَؤُلاءِ دِينُهُمْ﴾ قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ: بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ لَمَّا نَفَرُوا مِنْ " مَكَّةَ " إِلَى بَدْرٍ، نَفَرَ مَعَهُمْ أُنَاسٌ قَدْ كَانُوا تَكَلَّمُوا بِالإِسْلامِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا قِلَّةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، ارْتَابُوا وَنَافَقُوا وَقَاتَلُوا مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، وَقَالُوا: ﴿غَرَّ هَؤُلاءِ دينهم﴾ يَعْنُونَ: الْمُؤْمِنِينَ.
قَالَ اللَّهُ: ﴿وَمَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيز﴾ فِي نقمته ﴿حَكِيم﴾ فِي أمره.
