"And if they incline"—meaning, if they lean—"to peace, then incline to it" (Qur'an 8:61).
Muhammad said: Peace (as-silm) here refers to reconciliation (as-sulh); from which is the saying of the poet:
(Of peace, you may take what you are satisfied with, while of war, a few gulps of its breaths suffice you.)
Surah al-Anfal from verse (62) to verse (64).
﴿وَإِن جنحوا﴾ مالوا ﴿للسلم فاجنح لَهَا﴾.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: السّلم هَا هُنَا: الصُّلْحُ؛ وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُ الشَّاعِرِ:
(السَّلْمُ تَأْخُذُ مِنْهَا مَا رَضِيتَ بِهِ … وَالْحَرْبُ يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ أَنْفَاسِهَا جُرَعُ)
سُورَة الْأَنْفَال من الْآيَة (٦٢) إِلَى الْآيَة (٦٤).
