He said: "It is the man whose tooth is broken, or who is wounded on his body; so he pardons [the perpetrator], and his sins are removed from him in proportion to what he has pardoned. If it was half of the blood money (diyah), then half of his sins are [removed]; if it was a quarter of the blood money, then a quarter of his sins; if it was a third of the blood money, then a third of his sins; and if it was the entirety of the blood money, then all of his sins [are removed]."
