"Indeed, Allah has given you victory in many regions," meaning: the day of Badr, and the days in which Allah granted victory to the Prophet and the believers.
"And on the day of Hunayn," meaning: and on the day of Hunayn, Allah granted you victory in it, "when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all" to the end of the verse. This is because when the Messenger of Allah went to Hunayn after the conquest of Makkah, he encountered the forces of Hawazin and Thaqif there, and they were nearly four thousand strong, while the Messenger of Allah - according to what some have mentioned - was with twelve thousand.
