an old man. Durayd said: "O assembly of Hawazin, is there anyone with you from the Banu Kilab?" They replied: "No." He asked: "Is there anyone from the Banu Ka'b?" They said: "No." He asked: "Is there anyone from the Banu 'Amir?" They said: "No." He asked: "Is there anyone with you from the Banu Hilal ibn 'Amir?" They said: "No." He said: "By Allah, if this were a good thing, you would not have surpassed them to it; so obey me and return." They disobeyed him, then they fought, and the companions of the Messenger of Allah were defeated. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Come to me, O servants of Allah." Al-'Abbas took hold of the bridle of the Messenger of Allah's mule, then called out: "O assembly of the Emigrants (Muhajirun) who pledged allegiance under the tree, and O assembly of the Helpers (Ansar) who gave refuge and support; this is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), come forth!" Al-'Abbas was a man with a booming voice; he made both parties hear him. They advanced: as for the believers, they advanced for the sake of Allah's victory and that of His Messenger, and as for the polytheists, they advanced to extinguish the light of Allah. They met at the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and fought a fierce battle.
