"They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary," meaning: and they took the Messiah, the son of Mary, as a lord. "And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He"—meaning He declares Himself above—"from what they associate with Him."
﴿اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَالْمَسِيحَ ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ﴾ أَي: وَاتَّخذُوا الْمَسِيح ابْن مَرْيَمَ رَبًّا ﴿وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلا لِيَعْبُدُوا إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ سُبْحَانَهُ﴾ يُنَزِّهُ نَفْسَهُ ﴿عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ﴾.
