Then He said: "If it had been an easy gain," meaning: a nearby spoil, "and an average journey," meaning: a short one, "they would have followed you, but the distance seemed too far to them," meaning: the journey. "And they will swear by Allah: 'If we were able,'" meaning: if we had found abundance in wealth, "'we would have come out with you.' They are destroying their own souls" through lying, "and Allah knows that they are surely liars," meaning: they only offered excuses with lies.
Surat at-Tawbah, from verse (43) to verse (47).
- فَقَالَ: ﴿لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا﴾ يَعْنِي: غَنِيمَةً قَرِيبَةً ﴿وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا﴾ أَيْ: قَرِيبًا ﴿لاتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَكِنْ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِم الشقة﴾ يَعْنِي: السَّفَرَ ﴿وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَوِ استطعنا﴾ يَعْنِي: لَوْ وَجَدْنَا سَعَةً فِي الْمَالِ ﴿لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ﴾ بِالْكَذِبِ ﴿وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ﴾ أَي: إِنَّمَا اعتلوا بِالْكَذِبِ.
