"They had already desired discord (fitnah)," meaning: polytheism, "from before," meaning: before you emigrated. "And they turned matters over for you," this is like His saying, may He be glorified and exalted: "And when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you, or kill you, or drive you out," and its explanation has already passed. "Until the truth came," the Qur'an, "and the command of Allah appeared," Islam, "while they were unwilling" for it to appear.
