The Prophet (peace be upon him) then prayed to Allah to bless him in what he gave and what he withheld. The hypocrites criticized him, saying: "He did not give this except out of reputation and hypocrisy." Then a man from the poor Muslims of the Ansar, who was called Abu Aqil, came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I spent the night hauling water [or working for] two measures of dates. As for one measure, I kept it for my family, and as for the other, here it is." The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) spoke kindly to him. The hypocrites said: "By Allah, Allah and His Messenger are surely in no need of Abu Aqil's measure." So Allah—Glory be to Him—revealed this verse up to His saying: "And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."
