"They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them" from your military expedition "so that you might turn away from them; so turn away from them," meaning do not kill them so long as they manifest faith and offer excuses.
﴿سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا انْقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِم﴾ من غزاتكم ﴿لتعرضوا عَنْهُم فأعرضوا عَنْهُم﴾ أَلا تَقْتُلُوهُمْ مَا أَظْهَرُوا الإِيمَانَ، وَاعْتَذَرُوا.
