[And those who took a mosque for] harm to the end of His saying: "And Allah is Knowing, Wise." The interpretation of al-Hasan:
When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on the expedition of Tabuk, he descended among the Ansar and built the Mosque of Quba; it is the one founded upon piety. The hypocrites among the Ansar had built a mosque, and they said: "We shall lean upon it, and if Muhammad comes to us in it, [we will welcome him], otherwise we will [not], and we will go therein for our needs and we will send to Abu 'Amir al-Rahib"—a warrior from the warriors of the Ansar who was called Abu 'Amir al-Rahib, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had taken him prisoner— "so he may come to us, and we will consult him regarding our affairs." When they built the mosque—which is the one concerning which Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) said: "And those who took a mosque for harm and disbelief and division among the believers"—meaning: among the community of the believers—"and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before"—meaning: Abu 'Amir. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began waiting for the revelation, neither going to them nor them coming to him. When that became prolonged for him, he called for his garment to go to them, for he was about to button it upon himself when Gabriel came to him and said: "Do not stand therein ever"—meaning: that mosque. "A mosque founded upon piety from the first day"—meaning: the Mosque of Quba—"is more worthy that you stand in it."
Muhammad said: His saying "and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger" means: in anticipation; it is said: I laid an ambush (arsadtu) for him with evil, and I watched (rasadtu) him with pardon. It has been said: I prepared (arsadtu) for him both good and evil alike.
