(And when a surah is revealed, some of them look at others) meaning, the hypocrites, (does anyone see you?) from among the Muslims; some of them say this to others. (Then they turn away) Al-Hasan said: meaning, they resolved upon disbelief. (Allah has turned away their hearts) this is an invocation, (because they are a people who do not understand) they do not return to faith.
Surah At-Tawbah from verse (128) to verse (129)
﴿وَإِذَا مَا أُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَظَرَ بَعضهم إِلَى بعض﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُنَافِقِينَ ﴿هَلْ يَرَاكُمْ مِنْ أحد﴾ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ؛ يَقُولُهُ بَعْضُهُمْ لبعضٍ ﴿ثمَّ انصرفوا﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَعْنِي: عَزَمُوا عَلَى الْكفْر ﴿صرف الله قُلُوبهم﴾ هَذَا دعاءٌ ﴿بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَا يفقهُونَ﴾ لَا يرجعُونَ إِلَى الْإِيمَان.
