Qatadah said:
Their envy of Muhammad and the Arabs drove them to disbelieve in him, even though they find him written in their scriptures.
"Every time they kindled the fire of war" against the Messenger of Allah, "Allah extinguished it," meaning: Allah humiliated them and granted him victory over them.
"And they strive to cause corruption in the land," meaning: they advocate therein for what contradicts the religion of Allah, while they are fully aware of that.
Surah al-Ma'idah from verse (65) to verse (66).
قَالَ قَتَادَةُ:
حَمَلَهُمْ حَسَدُ محمدٍ وَالْعَرَبِ عَلَى أَنْ كَفَرُوا بِهِ، وَهُمْ يَجِدُونَهُ مَكْتُوبًا عِنْدَهُمْ.
﴿كُلَّمَا أوقدوا نَارا للحرب﴾ لِحَرْبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﴿أَطْفَأَهَا اللَّهُ﴾ يَعْنِي: أَذَلَّهُمُ اللَّهُ، وَنَصَرَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ.
﴿ويسعون فِي الأَرْض فَسَادًا﴾ أَي: يدعونَ فِيهَا إِلَّا خِلَافِ دِينِ اللَّهِ، وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ذَلِك.
