"And those who have earned evil deeds—the recompense of an evil deed is its like." That is: the recompense for polytheism is the Fire. "As if their faces were covered with patches"—plural of piece—"of the night, dark," meaning: in its state of darkness.
﴿وَالَّذِينَ كَسَبُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ جَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ بِمِثْلِهَا﴾ أَيْ: جَزَاءُ الشِّرْكِ: النَّارَ ﴿كَأَنَّمَا أغشيت وُجُوههم قطعا﴾ جَمْعُ: قِطْعَةٍ ﴿مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا﴾ أَي: فِي حَال ظلمته.
