"And they say, 'When will this promise be, if you should be truthful?'" The polytheists say this regarding what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to promise them of the punishment of Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) if they did not believe, so they would hasten him for the punishment, out of mockery and denial.
﴿وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُم صَادِقين﴾ يَقُولُهُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ لِمَا كَانَ يَعِدُهُمْ بِهِ النَّبي ﷺ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ عز وجل إِنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا، فَكَانُوا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَهُ بِالْعَذَابِ استهزاءً وتكذيباً.
