"But none believed in Moses, except some offspring from his people." Mujahid said: This means the children of those to whom Moses was sent, "out of fear of Pharaoh and their chiefs," meaning their nobles, "that he might persecute them," that is, that Pharaoh might kill them, "And indeed, Pharaoh was high-handed in the land," meaning he was a tyrant who transgressed against them and exceeded all bounds, "and indeed, he was one of the transgressors."
﴿فَمَا آمَنَ لِمُوسَى إِلا ذُرِّيَّةٌ من قومه﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: يَعْنِي: أَوْلادَ الَّذِينَ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْهِمْ مُوسَى ﴿عَلَى خَوْفٍ من فِرْعَوْن وملئهم﴾ يَعْنِي: أَشْرَافهم ﴿أَن يفتنهم﴾ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ ﴿وَإِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ لعال فِي الأَرْض﴾ أَيْ: لباغٍ يَبْغِي عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَتَعَدَّى ﴿وَإِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ﴾.
