"Behold, they fold their chests to hide from Him." Al-Hasan said: They fold their chests over what they are upon of disbelief, in order to hide from Him by that. They think that Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, does not know what they are hiding. Some of them said: They are the hypocrites.
Muhammad said: The meaning of "they fold their chests" is: they fold what is inside them and conceal it.
"Behold, when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal." Muhammad said: The meaning of "they cover themselves with their garments" is: they cover themselves with them. It is said: I covered myself with my garment, and I draped it over me.
Surah Hud, verse (6) only.
﴿أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ﴾.
قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ عَلَى مَا هُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ؛ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا مِنْهُ بِذَلِكَ؛ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ ﷿ لَا يَعْلَمُ الَّذِي يَسْتَخْفُونَ بِهِ. قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: هُمُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَعْنَى ﴿يثنون صُدُورهمْ﴾: يَطْوُونَ مَا فِيهَا وَيَسْتُرُونَهُ.
﴿أَلا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يسرون وَمَا يعلنون﴾ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَعْنَى ﴿يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ﴾: يَسْتَتِرُونَ بِهَا؛ يُقَالُ: اسْتَغْشَيْتُ ثَوْبِي وتغشيته.
سُورَة هود من الْآيَة (٦) فَقَط.
