[And if We give him a taste of favor after hardship that has touched him] meaning: We relieved him from that hardship which had befallen him, [he will surely say, "Bad times have left me,"] meaning: the affliction has departed from me, [indeed, he is exultant] regarding the world, [boastful] meaning: he has no patience during hardship, nor gratitude during ease.
﴿وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَاهُ نَعْمَاءَ بَعْدَ ضَرَّاءَ مسته﴾ أَيْ: عَافَيْنَاهُ مِنْ تِلْكَ الضَّرَّاءِ الَّتِي نزلت بِهِ ﴿لَيَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ السَّيِّئَاتُ عَنِّي﴾ ذَهَبَ الضُّرُّ عَنِّي ﴿إِنَّهُ لَفَرِحٌ﴾ بالدنيا ﴿فخور﴾ يَقُولُ: لَيْسَتْ لَهُ حسبةٌ عِنْدَ ضَرَّاءَ، وَلا شُكْرٌ عِنْدَ سَرَّاءَ
