His saying, may He be exalted: "And your family, except he against whom the word has gone forth," meaning the wrath; that is: his son. "And whoever believes," meaning: and carry whoever has believed. Allah, may He be exalted, said: "And none believed with him except a few." Al-Suddi said: Meaning eighty souls: forty men and forty women.

Qatada said: None were saved in the ark except Noah, his wife, and his three sons: Sam, Ham, and Yafith, and their wives; thus, the total of them was eight.
