[He] said: "There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for those upon whom He has mercy," meaning: those who were on the ark.
Muhammad said: "No protector (ʿāṣim)" is in the sense of: no one protected (maʿṣūm); just as they said: "poured (dāfiq) water," in the sense of: poured out (madfūq).
﴿قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ إِلا مَنْ رَحِمَ﴾ يَعْنِي: الَّذِينَ كَانُوا فِي السَّفِينَةِ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: ﴿لَا عَاصِم﴾ فِي مَعْنَى: لَا مَعْصُومَ؛ كَمَا قَالُوا: مَاءٌ [دَافِقٌ] بِمَعْنَى مَدْفُوقٌ.
