"You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers to be the Jews and those who associate others with Allah," meaning: the polytheists of the Arabs; and they are those who were present with the Prophet from among the polytheists at that time. "And you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, 'We are Christians,'" meaning: those of them who believed.
"That is because among them are priests and monks," meaning: those among them who believed, "and because they are not arrogant," toward the worship of Allah and belief in Allah.
