"And they were followed in this," meaning: in this world, "by a curse," meaning: the punishment with which He punished them through drowning, "and on the Day of Resurrection," meaning: and they were followed on the Day of Resurrection by a curse. "Wretched is the gift which is given." Ata said: "Two curses from Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) followed one another upon them: one curse after another; the curse of this world, and the curse of the Hereafter."
Muhammad said: "It was said: The meaning is: Wretched is the gift that is bestowed."
﴿وأتبعوا فِي هَذِه﴾ يَعْنِي: الدُّنْيَا ﴿لَعنه﴾ يَعْنِي: الْعَذَابُ الَّذِي عَذَّبَهُمْ بِهِ من الْغَرق ﴿وَيَوْم الْقِيَامَة﴾ أَيْ: وَأُتْبِعُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لَعْنَةً ﴿بئس الرفد المرفود﴾ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ: تَرَادَفَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ ﷿ لَعْنَتَانِ: لَعْنَةُ بَعْدَ لَعْنَةٍ؛ لَعْنَةُ الدُّنْيَا، وَلَعْنَةُ الآخِرَةِ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: وَقِيلَ: الْمَعْنَى: بئس الْعَطاء الْمُعْطى.
