"We relate to you the best of stories," Qatada said: from the past scriptures and the affairs of God in previous nations, "by what We have revealed to you of this Quran," meaning: through Our revelation of this Quran to you, "and even though you were before it," meaning: before the Quran was revealed to you, "among the heedless," just as He says: "And thus We have revealed to you a spirit from Our command. You did not know what the Book was, nor what faith was."
Surah Yusuf from verse (4) to verse (6).
﴿نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ الْقَصَصِ﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: مِنَ الْكُتُبِ الْمَاضِيَةِ، وَأُمُورِ اللَّهِ السَّالِفَةِ فِي الأُمَمِ ﴿بِمَا أَوْحَينَا إِلَيْك هَذَا الْقُرْآن﴾ أَيْ: بِوَحْيِنَا إِلَيْكَ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ ﴿وَإِن كنت من قبله﴾ أَيْ: مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ عَلَيْك الْقُرْآن ﴿لمن الغافلين﴾ كَقَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَكَذَلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا مَا كُنْتَ تَدْرِي مَا الْكتاب وَلَا الْإِيمَان﴾.
