"Kill Joseph or cast him out to a land, so that the face of your father may be free for you." They were not prophets on the day they uttered this statement. "And you will be after him a righteous people," meaning: your status with your father will be rectified, according to the interpretation of al-Hasan. Others said: It means you will repent after killing him.
﴿اقْتُلُوا يُوسُفَ أَوِ اطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًا يخل لكم وَجه أبيكم﴾ وَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَوْمَ قَالُوا هَذِهِ الْمَقَالَةَ أَنْبِيَاءَ ﴿وَتَكُونُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ قوما صالحين﴾ يَعْنُونَ: تَصْلُحُ مَنْزِلَتُكُمْ عِنْدَ أَبِيكُمْ؛ فِي تَفْسِيرِ الْحَسَنِ.
وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: يَعْنُونَ: تَتُوبُونَ مِنْ بَعْدِ قَتْلِهِ
