and heat. When it was winter, the she-camel would spend the season in the lowlands of the valley where it was warm and fertile, while their livestock would ascend to the highlands of the valley where it was barren and cold. This caused harm to their livestock, in accordance with the decree that Allah willed. One day, while a group of them were drinking wine, the water they used for mixing it ran out. They sent a man to fetch water for them, but it was the day for the she-camel to drink. He returned to them without water and said, "The she-camel stood between me and the water." Others then sent another man, who said the same thing. Some of them said to others, "What are you waiting for? She has harmed us and our livestock." Consequently, the most wretched among them arose and slaughtered her. They shouted to one another, "Go after the calf!" The calf ascended the mountain, and Salih said to them, "Enjoy yourselves in your home for three days" [Qur'an 11:65].
Qatada said: It was mentioned to us that when Salih informed them that the punishment would come upon them, they wore garments of leather and wool and smeared themselves with clay. He said to them, "The sign of that is that your faces will turn yellow on the first day, red on the second, and black on the third day." When the third day arrived, the calf faced the Qibla and said, "O Lord, my mother! O Lord, my mother! O Lord, my mother!" At that moment, Allah sent the punishment upon them.
