Shurahbil. Her people perished, so she became queen. It is said that when she went to sleep, she would lock the doors. Once she had locked the doors and gone to her bed, the hoopoe came to her, entering through a small opening in her house, and dropped the letter onto her stomach. She took the letter and read it, then said: "O assembly, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter." This means: it is excellent in its content, up to the verse. "Do not be haughty toward me," meaning: do not stay away from me, "and come to me as Muslims [submitting to Allah]." Al-Kalbi said: This means surrendering, and it does not mean [the religion of] Islam.
Surah An-Naml, verses 29 to 35.
شُرُحْبِيلَ، فَهَلَكَ قَوْمُهَا فَمَلَكَتْ، وَأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ إِذَا رَقَدَتْ غَلَّقَتِ الْأَبْوَابَ، فَلَمَّا غَلَّقَتِ الْأَبْوَابَ وَأَوَتْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهَا، أَتَاهَا الْهُدْهُدُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ مِنْ كُوَّةِ بَيْتِهَا، فَقَذَفَ الصَّحِيفَةَ عَلَى بَطْنِهَا؛ فَأَخَذَتِ الصَّحِيفَةَ فَقَرَأَتْهَا فَقَالَت: ﴿يَا أَيهَا الْمَلأُ إِنِّي أُلْقِيَ إِلَيَّ كِتَابٌ كريم﴾ حَسَنٌ؛ أَيْ: حَسَنٌ مَا فِيهِ، الْآيَة. ﴿أَلا تعلوا عَليّ﴾ أَيْ: لَا تَتَخَلَّفُوا عَنِّي ﴿وَأْتُونِي مُسلمين﴾ قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ: أَيْ مُسْتَسْلِمِينَ؛ لَيْسَ يَعْنِي: الْإِسْلَام.
