and her throne, as well as the chairs of the great kings. Then Sulayman entered, and the nobles of his army entered with him. Then it was said to her, 'Enter the palace,' and the door was opened. When she intended to enter, she suddenly saw the fish and the frogs, and she thought it was a trick against her so that she would drown. Then she looked and saw Sulayman upon his throne, and the people with him on the chairs. She thought she was at a ford (makhada), so she uncovered her legs, and they had leprosy (baras) on them. When Sulayman saw them, he disliked her. When the jinn realized that Sulayman had seen what she used to hide from the people, the jinn said to her, 'Do not uncover your legs, nor your feet, for it is only a palace of glass.'
Muhammad said: Every tall structure is a 'sarh,' and 'mumarrad' is derived from saying, 'I smoothed (maradtu) the thing,' meaning I tiled it or made it smooth. From this comes 'al-amrad' (the beardless), who has no hair on his face. 'She said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself"' (Qur'an 27:44), meaning: she fell short; referring to what she was upon of disbelief.
Surat al-Naml from (verse 45 to verse 53).
وَعَرْشَهَا وَكَرَاسِيَّ عُظَمَاءِ الْمُلُوكِ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ سُلَيْمَانُ، وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ عُظَمَاءُ جُنُوده] ثمَّ (ل ٢٥٠) قِيلَ لَهَا: ادْخُلِي الصَّرْحَ وَفُتِحَ الْبَابُ؛ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَتِ الدُّخُولَ إِذَا هِيَ بِالْحِيتَانِ وَالضَّفَادِعِ، فَظَنَّتْ أَنَّهُ مَكْرٌ بِهَا لِتَغْرَقَ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَتْ فَإِذَا هِيَ بِسُلَيْمَانَ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ، وَالنَّاسُ عِنْدَهُ عَلَى الْكَرَاسِيِّ؛ فَظَنَّتْ أَنَّهَا بمخاضة، فَكشفت عَن سَاقيهَا وَكَانَ بِهَا بَرَصٌ؛ فَلَمَّا رَآهَا سُلَيْمَانُ كَرِهَهَا، فَلَمَّا عَرِفَتِ الْجِنُّ أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ قَدْ رَأَى مِنْهَا مَا كَانَتْ تَكْتُمُ مِنَ النَّاسِ، قَالَتْ لَهَا الْجِنُّ: لَا تَكْشِفِي عَنْ سَاقَيْكِ، وَلَا عَنْ قَدَمَيْكِ؛ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ صَرْحٌ مِنْ قَوَارِيرَ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: كُلُّ بِنَاءٍ مُطُوَّلٍ: صَرْحٌ، وَالْمُمَرَّدِ يُقَالُ مِنْهُ: مَرَدْتُ الشَّيْءَ إِذَا بَلَطْتُهُ أَوْ مَلَسْتُهُ، وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ الْأَمْرَدُ الَّذِي لَا شَعْرَ فِي وَجْهِهِ. ﴿قَالَتْ رَبِّ إِنِّي ظلمت نَفسِي﴾ أَي: تقصتها؛ يَعْنِي: مَا كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْكفْر.
