upon you." This is a word of forbearance toward the polytheists, and a greeting among the believers. "We seek not the ignorant," meaning: we do not wish to be among them.
Muhammad said: It has been said that the meaning of "Peace be upon you" here is: between us and you there is peace. This was before they were commanded to fight them.
Surah Al-Qasas from (verse 56 to verse 59).
عَلَيْكُم﴾ كَلِمَةُ حِلْمٍ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، وَتَحِيَّةٌ بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿لَا نَبْتَغِي الْجَاهِلِينَ﴾ أَي: لَا نَكُون مِنْهُم.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: وَقِيلَ: مَعْنَى ﴿سَلامٌ عَلَيْكُم﴾ هَاهُنَا؛ أَيْ: بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْمُسَالَمَةُ، وَكَانَ هَذَا قَبْلَ أَنْ (يُؤْمَرُوا بِقِتَالِهِمْ).
