"And We will extract from every nation a witness"—meaning: We shall bring forth a messenger. "Then We will say, 'Produce your proof'"—meaning: your argument that Allah commanded you to follow the polytheism you were upon. "And lost from them is what they used to invent"—meaning: their idols which they used to worship.
Surah Al-Qasas, from (verses 76-79).
﴿وَنَزَعْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ شَهِيدًا﴾ أَيْ: أَحْضَرْنَا رَسُولًا ﴿فَقُلْنَا هَاتُوا برهانكم﴾ حُجَّتُكُمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُم عَلَيْهِ من الشّرك ﴿وَضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ﴾ يَعْنِي: أَوْثَانَهُمُ الَّتِي كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَهَا.
