Al-Mutalammis said:
(And whenever a tyrant turned his cheek [in arrogance]… We straightened his head for him, and so it became upright.)
Regarding His saying: (And do not walk on the earth insolently [marahan]) i.e., with arrogance. (Indeed, Allah does not like everyone who is self-deluded and boastful [fakhur]) i.e., arrogant and boastful; meaning: one who is conceited by what he has been given and does not thank Allah.
قَالَ الْمُتَلَمِّسُ:
(وَكُنَّا إِذَا الْجَبَّارُ صَعَّرَ خَدَّهُ … أَقَمْنَا لَهُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ فَتَقَوَّمَا)
قَوْلُهُ: ﴿وَلا تَمْشِ فِي الأَرْض مرحا﴾ أَيْ: تَعَظُّمًا ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يحب كل مختال فخور﴾ أَيْ: مُتَكَبِّرٍ فَخُورٍ، يَعْنِي: يُزْهَى بِمَا أُعْطِيَ، وَلَا يَشْكُرُ اللَّهَ
