{Then We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties was better able to calculate the time they had stayed.} Muhammad said: 'Amadan' (a duration) is in the accusative case (mansub) as a specification (tamyiz); the meaning is: that We might know which of the two parties better calculated their stay in terms of duration. His saying: {Then We raised them up} means: from their sleep, and everything that is stationary, you move it to cause it to act.
﴿ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ أحصى لما لَبِثُوا أمدا﴾ قَالَ مُحَمَّد: (أمدا) مَنْصُوبٌ عَلَى التَّمْيِيزِ؛ الْمَعْنَى: لِنَعْلَمَ أَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَى لِلُبْثِهِمْ فِي الأمد، وَقَوله: ﴿ثمَّ بعثناهم﴾ يَعْنِي: مِنْ نَوْمِهِمْ، وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ سَاكِنٌ حَرَّكْتَهُ لِلتَّصَرُّفِ
