"And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease say," meaning the hypocrites. Disease, in the interpretation of Qatadah, is hypocrisy. "What Allah and His Messenger promised us," regarding what he claims to be his Messenger, "is nothing but delusion," meaning: Allah promised us victory, yet we do not see ourselves being granted victory; rather, we see ourselves being killed and defeated. However, there was nothing in what Allah promised them to suggest that none of them would be killed or that they would not be defeated at certain times; rather, He promised them victory in the end.
