"And they had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs," meaning: they would flee, "and ever is the covenant of Allah a subject of questioning," meaning: He will ask them about the covenant which they did not fulfill.
﴿وَلَقَدْ كَانُوا عَاهَدُوا اللَّهَ مِنْ قبل لَا يولون الأدبار﴾ أَيْ: يَنْهَزِمُونَ ﴿وَكَانَ عَهْدُ اللَّهِ مسئولا﴾ يَعْنِي: يَسْأَلُهُمْ عَنِ الْعَهْدِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَفُوا بِهِ.
