your wife. Zayd kept her for as long as Allah willed, then he divorced her. When she had completed her waiting period, Allah revealed her marriage to the Messenger of Allah from heaven. He said: "And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor..." up to His saying: "...We gave her to you in marriage." The Messenger of Allah then summoned Zayd and said: "Go to Zaynab and inform her that Allah has given her to me in marriage." Zayd went, knocked at the door, and it was asked: "Who is this?" He replied: "Zayd." She said: "What need has Zayd of me, now that he has divorced me?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah has sent me to you." She replied: "Welcome to the messenger of the Messenger of Allah," and she opened the door for him. He entered upon her while she was weeping. Zayd said: "May Allah not cause your eyes to weep. You were truly the best of women"—or he said: "the best of wives; you would fulfill my oaths and obey my commands, but Allah has replaced me for you with someone better." She asked: "Who is it, may you lose your father?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah." She then fell down prostrate.
