"And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening." Qatada said: These are the two prayers, the dawn prayer and the afternoon prayer, and after them, the prayers were obligated before the Prophet’s departure from Mecca to Medina by a year. "And let not your eyes pass beyond them," out of contempt for them, "desiring the adornments of the worldly life."
Muhammad said: The meaning of "let not your eyes pass beyond" is: do not turn your gaze away from them toward others.
Yahya said: This was revealed regarding Salman al-Farisi, Suhayb, Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, and Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfa. The polytheists said to the Prophet, peace be upon him: If you wish for us to sit with you, then drive these people away from us.
