"And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them?" meaning: he does not believe in them; that is, there is no one more unjust than he. "Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings"—veils—"lest they understand it"—so that they do not understand it—"and in their ears deafness," which is deafness to guidance. "And if you invite them to guidance, they will never be guided, then, ever," meaning: those who die in their state of polytheism.
﴿وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذُكِّرَ بِآيَاتِ ربه فَأَعْرض عَنْهَا﴾ أَيْ: لَمْ يَؤْمِنْ بِهَا؛ أَيْ: لَا أَحَدَ أَظْلَمُ مِنْهُ. ﴿إِنَّا جعلنَا على قُلُوبهم أكنة﴾ أغطية ﴿أَن يفقهوه﴾ لِئَلَّا يَفْقَهُوهُ ﴿وَفِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا﴾ وَهُوَ الصَّمَمُ عَنِ الْهُدَى ﴿وَإِنْ تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَى الْهُدَى فَلَنْ يَهْتَدُوا إِذا أبدا﴾ يَعْنِي: الَّذِينَ يَمُوتُونَ عَلَى شِرْكِهِمْ.
