[He] said, 'That in which my Lord has established me is better' than your payment.
Muhammad [Ibn Abi Zamanin] says: Whoever read 'makkannī' (مكني), the meaning is 'makkananī' (مكنني), except that he assimilated the nūn into the nūn due to the meeting of two nūns. And whoever read 'makkananī' (مكنني) by expressing both nūns, that is permissible, because they are from two words: the first is from the verb, and the second enters with the pronoun. 'So assist me with strength,' meaning: a number of men, 'I will set between you and them a rampart.'
Muhammad says: A 'radm' (rampart) in the language is more than a 'sadd' (barrier); because 'radm' is what has been placed one part upon another. It is said: 'thawbun muraddam' (a patched garment) when it has been patched, patch upon patch. And it is said for everything that is naturally blocked: 'sud' (barrier/closed), and what is of human labor is 'sadd' with a fatha (vowel sign). It has also been said that they are two linguistic variants for one meaning: 'sadd' and 'sud', with the fatha and the damma.
﴿قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّي فِيهِ رَبِّي خير﴾ مِنْ جُعْلِكُمْ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَنْ قَرَأَ (مكني) فَالْمَعْنَى: مَكَّنَنِي، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ أَدْغَمَ النُّونَ فِي النُّونِ؛ لِاجْتِمَاعِ النُّونَيْنِ، وَمَنْ قَرَأَ (مَكَّنَنِي) بِإِظْهَارِ النُّونَيْنِ، فَذَلِكَ جَائِزٌ؛ لِأَنَّهُمَا مِنْ كَلِمَتَيْنِ: الْأُولَى مِنَ الْفِعْلِ، وَالثَّانِيَةُ تَدْخُلُ مَعَ الِاسْمِ الْمُضْمَرِ. ﴿فَأَعِينُونِي بِقُوَّةٍ﴾ يَعْنِي: عَدَدًا مِنَ الرِّجَالِ ﴿أَجْعَلْ بَيْنكُم وَبينهمْ ردما﴾.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: الرَّدْمُ فِي اللُّغَةِ: أَكْثَرُ مِنَ السَّدِّ؛ لِأَنَّ الرَّدْمَ مَا جُعِلَ بَعْضُهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ؛ يُقَالُ: ثَوْبٌ مُرَدَّمٌ؛ إِذَا كَانَ قَدْ رُقِعَ رُقْعَةً فَوْقَ رُقْعَةٍ، وَيُقَالُ لِكُلِّ مَا كَانَ مَسْدُودًا خِلْقَهً: سُدٌّ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنْ عَمَلِ النَّاسِ فَهُوَ سَدٌ بِالْفَتْحِ، وَقَدْ قِيلَ: إِنَّهُمَا لُغَتَانِ بِمَعْنًى وَاحِدٍ: سَدٌّ، وَسُدٌّ؛ بِالْفَتْحِ وَالضَّمِّ.
