"Then the pains of childbirth drove her," Mujahid said: meaning, compelled her.
Muhammad said: The root of the word is from 'coming' (al-maji'); it is said: 'Need brought (ja'at bi) me to you,' and 'Need compelled (aja'atni) me to you.' Zuhayr said:
(And a neighbor who traveled, relying upon you... fear and hope compelled (aja'at-hu) him.)
And 'al-makhad' (the pains of labor) is the approach of childbirth; it is said: 'makhadat al-mar'ah' and 'makhidat' (the woman went into labor).
"She said, 'Oh, I wish I had died before this and was something forgotten, completely forgotten.'" Qatadah said: She meant something that is not known and not mentioned. She said this due to what she feared of scandal.
Muhammad said: 'Al-nasy' in the speech of the Arabs originally refers to a trivial thing which, if discarded, is forgotten out of negligence.
﴿فأجاءها الْمَخَاض﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: يَعْنِي: أَلْجَأَهَا.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: وَأَصْلُ الْكَلِمَةِ مِنَ: الْمَجِيءِ؛ يُقَالُ: ﴿جَاءَتْ بِي﴾ الْحَاجَةُ إِلَيْكَ، وَأَجَاءَتْنِي الْحَاجَةُ إِلَيْكَ؛ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ:
(وَجَارٍ سَارَ مُعْتَمِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ … أَجَاءَتْهُ الْمَخَافَةُ وَالرَّجَاءُ)
وَالْمَخَاضُ: دُنُوُّ الْوِلَادَةِ، يُقَالُ: مَخَضَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ ومَخِضَتْ. ﴿قَالَتْ يَا لَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَذَا وَكنت نسيا منسيا﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: تَعْنِي شَيْئًا لَا يُعْرَفُ، وَلَا يُذْكَرُ؛ قَالَتْ هَذَا مِمَّا خَشِيَتْ مِنَ الْفَضِيحَةِ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: النَّسْيُ فِي كَلَامِ الْعَرَبِ أَصْلُهُ الشَّيْءُ الْحَقِيرُ؛ الَّذِي إِذَا ألقِي نسي غَفلَة عَنهُ.
