"Indeed, you have brought a thing fariya" — meaning: grave or momentous.
Muhammad said: It is said: "So-and-so yafri al-farya" when he performs an action or makes a statement and exaggerates therein, whether it is for good or evil. Some have cited the following verse:
(How many a person calls another a friend, yet if you were to see his speech in his absence, that which he concocts would grieve you.)
﴿لقد جِئْت شَيْئا فريا﴾ أَيْ: عَظِيمًا.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: يُقَالُ: فُلَانٌ يَفْرِي الْفَرْيَ إِذَا عَمِلَ عَمَلًا أَوْ قَالَ قَوْلًا فَبَالَغَ فِيهِ؛ كَانَ فِي خَيْرٍ أَوْ شَرٍّ، وَأَنْشَدَ بَعْضُهُمْ:
(أَلَا رُبَّ مَنْ يَدْعُو صَدِيقًا وَلَوْ تَرَى … مَقَالَتَهُ بِالْغَيْبِ سَاءَكَ مَا يَفْرِي)
