("Then the factions differed from among them,") meaning: the Christians; so they disputed concerning Jesus. One group said: "He is the Son of God." Another group said: "Indeed, Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary." And a group said: "Allah is a God, and Jesus is a God, and Mary is a God."
﴿فَاخْتلف الْأَحْزَاب من بَينهم﴾ يَعْنِي: النَّصَارَى؛ فَتَجَادَلُوا فِي عِيسَى؛ فَقَالَتْ فِرْقَةٌ: هُوَ ابْنُ اللَّهِ، وَقَالَتْ فِرْقَةٌ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْمَسِيح ابْن مَرْيَمَ، وَقَالَتْ فِرْقَةٌ: اللَّهُ إِلَهٌ، وَعِيسَى إِلَهٌ، وَمَرْيَمُ إِلَهٌ.
