"Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is upon it," meaning: We will cause the earth and whoever is upon it to perish, "and to Us they will be returned" on the Day of Resurrection.
﴿إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَرِثُ الأَرْضَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا﴾ أَيْ: نُهْلِكَ الْأَرْضِ وَمِنْ عَلَيْهَا ﴿وإلينا يرجعُونَ﴾ يَوْم الْقِيَامَة.
