[He] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham," meaning to worship them. "If you do not desist," from reviling and criticizing them, "I will surely stone you," meaning with stones, so I shall kill you with them.
Al-Suddi said: The meaning of "I will surely stone you" is: I will surely revile you.
Muhammad said: The Arabs say, "So-and-so throws at so-and-so," and "So-and-so stones so-and-so," with one meaning; they intend by it reviling. "And avoid me a long time," meaning: for a long while.
