[Abraham] said, "Peace be upon you." Abraham said this. Al-Hasan said: This is a word of forbearance. "I will ask my Lord for forgiveness for you, for He has ever been gracious to me."
Al-Kalbi said: It means merciful. Some of them said: Kind.
Muhammad said: "Hafiya" (one is gracious to) someone, in the sense of "hifwah" and "hafawah," is used when one treats them well and is kind to them.
﴿قَالَ سَلام عَلَيْك﴾ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَقُولُهُ، قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: هَذِهِ كَلِمَةُ حِلْمٍ ﴿سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي إِنَّه كَانَ بِي حفيا﴾.
قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ: يَعْنِي: رَحِيمًا، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: لَطِيفًا.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: حَفِيَ فُلَانٌ بِفُلَانٍ حِفْوَةً وَحَفَاوَةً؛ إِذَا بره وألطفه.
