the people of Pharaoh adornments belonging to them, [I believe] for a day of festival. They had been commanded to depart by night, and the people disliked returning the borrowed items to the people of Pharaoh, lest they become aware of them. So, they departed by night while the borrowed items were with them. These were the "azwar" (burdens) about which they said: "We were burdened with loads," meaning: heavy items. Then the Samiri said to them, after twenty days and twenty nights had passed: "You have only been afflicted by this jewelry, so bring it forth." He cast what he had of the jewelry, and the people cast what they had with them. He forged it into a calf, then cast into its mouth the earth he had taken from beneath the hoof of Gabriel's horse on the day the Children of Israel crossed the sea, and it began to low like a cow. The enemy of God said: "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot," meaning: Moses forgot. The meaning is: Moses sought this, but he (forgot it) and took a different path.
آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ حُلِيًّا لَهُمْ [أَظُنُّهُ] لِيَوْمِ الْعِيدِ، وَكَانُوا قَدْ أُمِرُوا أَنْ يُسْرَى بِهِمْ لَيْلًا، فَكَرِهَ الْقَوْمُ أَنْ يَرُدُّوا الْعَوَارِيَ عَلَى آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ، فَيَفْطِنُوا لَهُمْ، فَأَسْرُوا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَالْعَوَارِي مَعَهُمْ؛ وَهِيَ الْأَوْزَارُ الَّتِي قَالُوا: ﴿حُمِّلْنَا أَوْزَارًا﴾ أَيْ: أَثْقَالًا، فَقَالَ لَهُمُ السَّامِرِيُّ بعد مَا مَضَت عشرُون يَوْمًا وَعشْرين لَيْلَةً: إِنَّمَا ابْتُلِيتُمْ بَهَذَا الْحُلِيِّ فَهَاتُوهُ. وَأَلْقَى مَا مَعَهُ مِنَ الْحُلِيِّ، وَأَلْقَى الْقَوْمُ مَا مَعَهُمْ، فَصَاغَهُ عِجْلًا، ثُمَّ أَلْقَى فِي فِيهِ التُّرَابَ الَّذِي كَانَ أَخَذَهُ مِنْ تَحْتِ حَافِرِ فَرَسِ جِبْرِيلَ يَوْمَ جَازَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَجَعَلَ يَخُورُ خُوَارَ الْبَقَرَةِ؛ فَقَالَ عَدُوُّ اللَّهِ: ﴿هَذَا إِلَهُكُمْ وَإِلَهُ مُوسَى فنسي﴾ أَيْ: نَسِيَ مُوسَى، الْمَعْنَى: أَنَّ مُوسَى طَلَبَ هَذَا وَلَكِنَّهُ (نَسِيَهُ) وَخَالفهُ فِي طَرِيق آخر؛
