"And thus do We recompense him who transgresses" against his own soul through polytheism, "and the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe" than the punishment of the worldly life, "and more lasting," meaning: it will never cease.

﴿وَكَذَلِكَ نجزي من أسرف﴾ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِالشِّرْكِ ﴿وَلَعَذَابُ الآخِرَةِ أَشد﴾ من عَذَاب الدُّنْيَا ﴿وَأبقى﴾ أَي: لَا يَنْقَطِع أبدا.
