"And by Allah, I will surely plot against your idols," the verse. Qatada said: We believe that he said this when they could not hear him. His people had invited him to a festival of theirs, but he refused and said, "Indeed, I am ill," using that as an excuse for them. Then, after they had turned away, he said: "And by Allah, I will surely plot against your idols," the verse.
﴿وتالله لأكيدن أصنامكم﴾ الْآيَةُ.
قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: [نَرَى] أَنَّهُ قَالَ ذَلِكَ حَيْثُ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ اسْتَدْعَاهُ قَوْمُهُ إِلَى عِيدٍ لَهُمْ؛ فَأبى وَقَالَ: ﴿إِنِّي سقيم﴾ اعْتَلَّ لَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لما ولوا: ﴿تالله لأكيدن أصنامكم﴾ الْآيَة.
