"And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness." Al-waqr [deafness] is the heaviness of hearing. "And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur'an," meaning that there is no god but He, "they turn their backs in aversion," meaning they turned away from it.
﴿وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَنْ يفقهوه وَفِي آذانهم وقرا﴾ الْوَقْرُ: ثَقَلُ السَّمْعِ ﴿وَإِذَا ذَكَرْتَ رَبك فِي الْقُرْآن وَحده﴾ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ ﴿ولوا على أدبارهم نفورا﴾ أَي: أَعرضُوا عَنهُ.
